Notes About Creating DocuWorks Documents

This topic describes cautions and constraints to be observed when creating DocuWorks documents.

File size, memory, and disk capacity

When creating from application data

Original data exceeding 50 MB cannot be attached to DocuWorks documents.

When creating from scanned data or image files

  • You cannot create DocuWorks documents from large JPEG files after compression exceeding 1 GB.
  • When creating documents from TIFF (MMR) files, you cannot create any DocuWorks document if the size after compression is larger than 1 GB.
  • When creating documents from files other than JPEG files and TIFF (MMR) files, you cannot create any DocuWorks document if the size before compression is larger than 1 GB.
  • When creating a DocuWorks document from scanned data or image files, a document cannot be created if the pixel size (the number of horizontal by vertical dots) is larger than 65,500.
Note
If a document cannot be created from scanned data, this problem may be worked out by reducing the file size, namely by changing the color palette setting and/or resolution setting on the scanner side.

File size

  • The size of a DocuWorks document created from an application may differ depending on the application version or print settings.
The size of a DocuWorks document may be reduced by adjusting the orientation, resolution, or color image compression.
  • When you create the freehand annotations with DocuWorks 6 or earlier, and then edit the freehand annotations and save the document with DocuWorks 7 or later, the file size may be larger.
Note
The following describes the size of a file before and after being converted to DocuWorks.
DocuWorks converts documents by directly interpreting drawing commands outputted to the printer by the application. The size of the output drawing command may differ depending on the type of application, the content of the data, and your OS. This may cause the converted file to be larger than the original file.

Overall

  • Processing will be cancelled if the memory space or hard disk space is insufficient. Sometimes this will result in creation of a DocuWorks document that contains only the data processed up to that point.
  • If the size of scanned data or image file exceeds 490 MB, the document may fail to be created regardless of the memory capacity.

Image Size Tables

When creating a DocuWorks document from an image file or converting a DocuWorks document into an image file, there is a limitation on operation depending on the size of bitmap data that are temporarily created during processing.
The size of bitmap data varies according to such factors as the format, the paper size, the colors, and the resolution of image files that are read in and image files that are output.
On a case-by-case basis, determine the size of bitmap data by consulting the tables below.
Note
The values shown in the table are calculated values. The values may differ from actual sizes.

Creating DocuWorks documents from image files

The relationships between the color mode, the size, and the resolution of image files to be read in at the time of document creation and the size of bitmap data before compression are shown in the following tables.

Converting a document into image data (Viewer/plug-in)

If the size of bitmap data that are created temporarily during processing is larger than 200 MB, the message appears, meaning that it may take a long time for conversion depending on the operating environment, and prompting you whether to continue the processing. If the size is greater than 1 GB, no conversion can be performed.
When converting into multi-page TIFF files, if the total byte count of the pages exceeds 1 GB, a warning message will appear even if the byte count of each page is smaller than 200 MB.

The relationship between the type of an image file to be output by image conversion and the size of bitmap data temporarily created during processing is shown in the following tables. On a case-by-case basis, see the appropriate table as directed.

Display/Print

Color

Since colors for display and colors for printing may differ from each other in some applications, DocuWorks document display colors may be dissimilar to application display colors.
Application and DocuWorks document display colors may also appear differently depending on color palette settings of your screen.

Hatch patterns

In some applications, methods used for rendering hatched patterns such as hatching and halftone dot meshing may differ for display and for printing, so the hatched patterns in DocuWorks documents may appear differently from those produced in the applications.

Thin lines

Thin lines in annotations, application pages, and on image pages may appear as follows:
  • Some lines and text may not appear depending on the zoom ratio.
  • Some lines and text may not be printed depending on the print resolution.
  • Dotted line, broken line and chain line may appear as full lines.

Line annotations and freehand annotations

When you create line annotations and freehand annotations with DocuWorks 7 or later and then display them with DocuWorks 6 or earlier, they may be jagged depending on the zoom ratio. Increase the zoom ratio to display them correctly.

Fonts

  • When creating a DocuWorks document from an application, fonts other than TrueType fonts that are installed in Windows are replaced with TrueType fonts, so the appearance and width of fonts may differ. Also, if the font width is different, the layout may be altered.
  • Select [Change the character code to Unicode (Ver.7 document)] when you create a DocuWorks document to convert glyph index characters not assigned in the Unicode set into graphic data.

Printing on PostScript printers

When printing on a PostScript printer, since transparent colors cannot be printed as expected, they may be replaced when printed with tinged colors or slash patterns.

Creating documents using DocuWorks Printer in the application side

Margins

When creating DocuWorks documents from applications, headers and footers may be cut off. If this is the case, make margin adjustments from the [DocuWorks Printer Properties] dialog box > [Paper/Output] tab > [Margins] in such a manner that documents may be created correctly.

Resolution

If the resolution of a DocuWorks document created from an application is different from that of the printer, it may result in the poor print quality.
To improve the print quality of a DocuWorks document, specify the same resolution set on the printer in the [DocuWorks Printer Properties] dialog box > [Quality] tab > [Resolution].

Document name

The names of DocuWorks documents that are created from applications may not be the same as those of original application data. The names of documents that are created vary according to the types of applications, the names of original data, and the like.
Using [Document Name Settings] on the [Detailed Settings] tab in the [DocuWorks Printer properties] dialog box may allow you to create a document having the same name as that of the original data.
However, the names of documents will remain the same as the corresponding original data if the documents are created through dragging-and-dropping operations, cutting-and-pasting actions and / or by using [Import Files] or [Import Folders] in Desk's [File] menu.

File size

The size of a DocuWorks document created from an application may differ depending on the application version or print settings.
The size of a DocuWorks document may be reduced by adjustment of [Orientation], [Resolution], or [Color image compression].

Others

In the case of such applications that do not allow you to print by dragging-and-dropping or copying-and-pasting into the printer icon, you cannot create any document by dragging and dropping or copying and pasting into Desk. In this case, start an application, and then create a document by selecting [DocuWorks Printer] in the [Print] dialog box.

Others

  • When application data consisting of multiple print jobs, such as Microsoft Excel data, are printed on DocuWorks Printer, a separate DocuWorks document is created for each print job.
When dragged and dropped into Desk, conversion to a DocuWorks document may not be performed successfully.
  • If you add an annotation, you cannot delete information or completely hide subsequent pages or other annotations. They may be displayed while drawing and depending on the high contrast settings. You can also search the hidden text and select the searched text to copy.
