Notes About Using DocuWorks

This topic describes precautions and restrictions on using DocuWorks.

Folders used by DocuWorks

Desk Folder

Do not perform file operations, such as adding or deleting folders or files, in the Desk folder directly from Windows Explorer. For example, do not manually delete or move the management files stored in "DWFolders\Link Folder". These files are used to connect to linked destination folders.

Temporary file folder

Do not perform file operations in the temporary file folder directly from Windows Explorer. This folder is used by DocuWorks-related applications for storing temporary files.

DocuWorks Desk

About thumbnails

The number of files that can be displayed as thumbnails depends on memory available on your PC. This number may decrease under the following conditions:
  • When multiple applications are running
  • When free space is limited
  • When thumbnails are magnified
In these cases, reduce the number of files in the folder to reduce the number of thumbnails displayed.

About management files

"dwdesk.ibm" and "dwdesk.idw" are management files used by DocuWorks Desk and stored in the user folder. They contain cache data which stores thumbnail image and position information.

About files being processed

If copying or moving files in Desk fails due to insufficient disk space, multiple copies of the processed files may exist. You must delete these files manually.

About temporary files

Files with the extension "xd#" and "xd$" are temporary DocuWorks files. Do not import these files into the user folder or the link folder of DocuWorks Desk.

Files Having a Path Containing Unicode Characters

Note
In this section, the word "Unicode specific character" is used. This character is exclusive to Unicode and cannot be converted to the character codes of some languages.

  • >If a DocuWorks file's path contains Unicode characters, a shading effect that indicates active state may not be applied to the file in the Desk thumbnail view. Pressing the <F5> key will apply the shading effect.
  • When you display a folder name containing Unicode characters in the Dialog Box to Sort Folders, the title displayed on the title bar in the dialog box may get garbled.
  • When an attempt is made to close files like this without saving after editing in Viewer, a confirmation message is displayed, and "?" is displayed for the Unicode characters in the file name. When [Yes] is clicked in this confirmation message, the Unicode characters in the file name are saved normally.
  • In the recently opened document menu in Viewer, when the file name contains Unicode characters, the Unicode characters are displayed as "?". Files such as these also cannot be opened from the recently opened document menu.
  • When a file path contains Unicode characters, [Send] in the [File] menu in Viewer cannot be selected and mail cannot be sent.
  • When the target file name in the image converter plug-in contains Unicode characters, the Unicode characters are displayed as "_" at [File name] in the [Image Converter] dialog box.
  • Files can be opened by command (dwviewer.exe) options in Viewer. However, Unicode characters are processed as "?" since characters specified in Unicode are treated as multi-byte code characters.
    The following options apply.
    • Document in a binder (/i)
    • Text string search (/q)
  • When a file is printed with the command (dwviewer.exe) /sp and /spt options in Viewer specified, protected documents are not printed and document names are recorded to the log. For files having a path containing Unicode characters, the Unicode characters in the "document name (full path)" section of the file name are recorded as "?".
  • When a file having a path containing Unicode characters is printed from Viewer, its file name is printed with "?" for the Unicode characters.
  • DocuWorks files having a path containing Unicode characters cannot be copied-and-pasted or dragged-and-dropped into Viewer in the page sorter view from Windows Explorer.
  • With DocuWorks files having a path containing Unicode characters, [Copy Current Page] and [Cut Current Page] in the document view are not available. Also, copying and cutting of the page selected in the page sorter view are not available.
  • With DocuWorks files having a path containing Unicode characters, pages in the page sorter view cannot be dragged.
  • When an image document or XPS (XML Paper Specification) document has a path containing a Unicode specific character, it is displayed not as a thumbnail but as an icon on the workspace in thumbnail view.
  • When you select a file whose path contains a Unicode character, the Unicode character may be displayed as "?" or a similar character on the status bar.
  • If an image file has a path containing a Unicode specific character, you cannot import the file to convert to a DocuWorks document.
Importing a folder also fails if it contains such an image file when image files are set as the target file for import.
  • It results in an error when you drag-and-drop an application file whose path contains a Unicode specific character to the workspace, select [Create page and attach original data] and then click [Execute] on the [Convert application file] dialog box.
  • If a binder has a Unicode character in its path, the file name gets garbled on the title bar of the [Binder Index] dialog box.
  • If file names include Unicode characters, the files are still displayed as icons on the workspace's thumbnail view even if the Unicode characters are eliminated.
  • When a CSV file is output using [Save the result in CSV format] on the [File] menu of the [Find] dialog box on DocuWorks Desk, Unicode characters in the path of files listed as search results are output as "?".
  • When you change a file name on DocuWorks Desk in thumbnail view, some characters may be converted into "?" if they are environment-dependent characters (Unicode) entered using an input method editor (IME). To avoid this, copy those characters from another application and paste them or change the view mode to list view and enter them.
  • Others

When you are using IME, environment dependent characters (Unicode) you enter may be converted to "?".
