Creating Documents From Application Data

Q.1
I want to create a document with a large number of pages using DocuWorks. Is there a limit to the number of pages per document?
A.1
When creating DocuWorks documents in one batch from application data containing a large number of pages, you are limited to 10,000 pages. However, stacking after creating DocuWorks documents will enable you to create documents that are more than 10,000 pages long.

Q.2
What fonts are supported by DocuWorks?
A.2
TrueType fonts installed in Windows. When you convert documents using other fonts, those fonts will be replaced with the closest TrueType fonts. For this reason, the fonts and layout may differ from the original data.
If [Change the character code to multi-byte (Ver.4 document)] is selected on the [DocuWorks Printer Properties] dialog box, converts characters unique to Unicode into the graphics data while creating DocuWorks document.

Q.3
Can I convert non-English characters into a DocuWorks document and correctly display it?
A.3
Characters that can be correctly converted into DocuWorks documents are following characters.
  • Shift JIS (Japanese)
  • KS C 5601 (Korean)
  • GB2312 (Chinese Simplified)
  • Big5 (Chinese Traditional)
  • TIS-620 (Thai)
  • Windows-1252 (Western European)
  • Unicode

Q.4
When I want to convert a file into a DocuWorks document, the [Print] dialog box appears and unless I click [Print], the file won't be converted into a DocuWorks document. Why is that?
A.4
That depends on the way it was made in the original application before converting. For example, when using Microsoft Excel, the [Print] dialog box of DocuWorks Printer appears in Microsoft Excel 95, but in Microsoft Excel 97, the file will be converted without the dialog box being displayed.

Q.5
Depending on the application, sometimes a file will not convert to a DocuWorks document by dragging and dropping into Desk. Why? Is there a way to handle this?
A.5
Files made in applications that cannot be printed by dragging and dropping to the printer icon or to its shortcut cannot be converted to DocuWorks documents. In this case, select the DocuWorks Printer in the [Print] dialog box to convert the file.

Q.6
How much smaller will application data be when converted into a DocuWorks document?
A.6
DocuWorks converts application data into DocuWorks documents based on output print information provided by the application in use. Printing methods differ with the application, and because there are differences according to the type of data, it is impossible to calculate the rate that data will reduce in size. In some rare cases, the size gets bigger.

Q.7
Why does the data size become considerably smaller with DocuWorks after conversion even when original application data is attached?
A.7
When creating a DocuWorks document from an application, the data necessary for viewing and printing is extracted from the original data so in most cases, this results in decreased data sizes. When attaching the original data, it is first compressed using FUJIFILM Business Innovation's proprietary compression scheme.

Q.8
What kind of relationship exists between the original data attached to a DocuWorks document and the original file? Can I open the attached original data using Windows Explorer or the like?
A.8
The original data attached to the DocuWorks document is a copy of the file before it was converted. For this reason, editing or deleting the original file after conversion will have no effect on the DocuWorks document. Furthermore, the original data attached to the DocuWorks document cannot be opened without using the Desk and Viewer functions. You cannot open attached data directly from the Windows Explorer.

Q.9
Sometimes, the names of DocuWorks documents that are created are not the same as those of original application data. Is there any workaround for this problem?
A.9
Do the one of the following procedures.

Q.10
When I convert a Microsoft Excel file to a DocuWorks document, only the first sheet is converted. What should I do?
A.10
Do the one of the following procedures.
  • Select [Print] from the [File] menu in Microsoft Excel. Select DocuWorks Printer in the [Print] dialog box, click [Entire workbook] from [Print what].
Click [Active sheet(s)] from [Print what] when you convert selected worksheets to DocuWorks documents.
  • When you convert an Excel file to DocuWorks documents by dragging-and-dropping it into the workspace of Desk, save the book with selecting the worksheets to be printed, and then drag-and-drop the file.
  • In the procedures noted above, multiple worksheets are combined into 1 DocuWorks document.
Note
You can specify the [Page Setup], [Page], and the resolution of [Print quality] of Microsoft Excel for each worksheet. However, when the setting of resolution is not unified, DocuWorks documents are created for each worksheet.
