[Secure PDF]

Select this to assign a required password to display or edit the PDF file, or to change the encryption level or edit permissions.

[Password] group

You can assign a required password to display the PDF file or to set/change the edit permissions of the PDF file.
If [Secure PDF] is not checked, then you cannot assign a password.
Note
>Use different passwords when setting both the user password and the master password.
Only alphanumeric characters may be used for the password.

[User Password:]

Select this to assign a required password to display the new PDF file, and enter the password into the right box.
Note
It is possible to set the user password only, but it is recommended that the master password be set at the same time.
If the user password only is set, the user who opens the PDF file using a PDF editing application would be able to change the password.

[Master Password:]

Select this if you want to assign a required password to set/change the edit permission of the PDF file, and enter the password into the right box.
The master password is required when you want to set the edit permissions and when you want to change the edit permissions of the PDF file.

[Permissions] group

You can configure certain operations not to be allowed while editing the PDF file using a PDF editing application.
You cannot configure this group, however, if [Secure PDF] is not checked.
Available options vary depending on the encryption level selected.
Important
  • Setting encryption levels and permissions requires setting a password (master password) for use in setting/changing edit permissions.

[Encryption Level:]

Select [Low (40-bit RC4)], [High (128-bit RC4)], [High (128-bit AES)], or [High (256-bit AES)].
Available options vary depending on the encryption level selected.

[Low (40-bit RC4)] setting

40-bit RC4 supports PDF 1.4-1.7. You can configure the following settings.
Note
Extract, Link, Article, Crop, Form field, and Comment are the functions available with a PDF editing application.
For information about the details of the PDF file editing functions, refer to the manual provided with the PDF editing application.

[Disallow Printing]

Select this if you do not allow printing of the PDF file (or outputting as another PDF file).

[Disallow copying or extracting of text, Images or other content]

Select this if you do not allow copying of selected text or images in the PDF file, or extracting specific pages.

[Disallow All Modification to the PDF file]

Select this if you do not allow links, articles, crop or form field filling.
Commenting and content copying are allowed even if you check [Disallow All Modification to the PDF file].

[Disallow addition or change of signature, stamp, comments, form fields]

Select this if you do not allow adding new comments or form fields, entering text to the existing comments, or changing the setting of the form fields.
You can display the existing comments or enter text to the existing form fields, even if you check [Disallow addition or change of signature, stamp, comments, form fields].

[High (128-bit RC4)/High (128-bit AES)]/High (256-bit AES)] setting

128-bit RC4 supports PDF 1.4-1.7, 128-bit AES supports PDF 1.6 and 1.7, and 256-bit AES supports PDF 1.7 and 2.0.
You can configure the following settings.
Note
  • Extract, Accessibility, Form field, Comment, and Signature are functions available with a PDF editing application.
    For information about the details of the PDF file editing functions, refer to the manual provided with a PDF editing application.
  • Displaying a PDF file requires a PDF viewer that supports the PDF version.

[Disallow Printing]

Select this to disallow printing of the PDF file (or outputting as another PDF file).

[Print All Pages]

Select this to allow printing of the PDF file at all resolution levels (or outputting as another PDF file).
This option can only be set if the [Disallow Printing] check box is deselected.

[Print in Low Resolution]

Select this to allow printing the PDF file only in low resolution (150 dpi) even if the PDF file is output as another PDF file by changing the security setting.
The print speed is slow because each page is output as a bitmap image.
Printing is not allowed if [Disallow Printing] is checked.

[Disallow copying or extracting of text, Images or other content]

Select this to disallow copying of selected text or images in the PDF file, or extracting specific pages.

[Disable Document Accessibility]

Select this if you do not want the PDF file to be edited using the accessibility function.
*This cannot be disabled if it is PDF version 2.0.

[Disallow addition or change of signature or sealing, comments, bookmarks and form fields]

Select this if you do not allow adding comments or form fields, entering text to the existing comments, or changing the setting of form fields.
You can display existing comments or enter text to existing form fields, even if you select [Disallow addition or change of signature or sealing, comments, bookmarks and form fields].

The following four items become selectable when this option is deselected.

[Allow edit, comment, input into form fields or signature and stamp]

Select this if you want to make all the edit functions except for the PDF file contents extraction and printing (or reconversion) available.

[Allow stamp without signature, comment, input into form fields and signature of existing signature fields]

Select this if you allow the user to create and fill form fields, to add comments, and to add signatures.

[Allow input into form fields and signature of existing signature fields]

Select this if you allow the user to fill form fields, and to add signatures. Form fields cannot be created.

[Allow Addition, Insertion, Deletion and Rotation of Document]

Select this if you allow the user to insert, delete, rotate pages and create thumbnails.
